This is a list of all the best places to study in San Diego, but honestly I don’t think there’s really a bad place to study here!
We’ve separated these into different sections to suit your study mood!
Late Night Study Spots in San Diego
The Living Room Coffeehouse

The El Cajon Blvd location is nestled in the university district, so SDSU students can enjoy the European-style cafe that’s open until 10pm all week long.
As well as boasting a chill outside patio, their interior boasts some very cool couches to get comfortable on while studying, and you can treat yourself to a wood-fired pizza or specialty pastry if you so fancy!
Lestat’s Coffee House

Hours: Hillcrest location 8am-12am every day, Park Blvd. location is 24 hours

Well, we officially found the latest late night study spot in San Diego: Lestat’s Park Blvd location is open 24 hours! Their Hillcrest spot is also a great late study option. The only problem here will be drinking too much of their awesome coffee!
San Diego Parks to Study In
Balboa Park
Address: Multiple addresses
Hours: Open daily 5:00am–11:00pm

I’ve put “multiple addresses” because there really are so many parts of this park and places to enter, it’s up to you to decide how you want to study! There are no shortages of park benches and relaxing gardens in Balboa Park.
Get some relaxing study time in one of the many gardens like Alcazar Garden, or the particularly cool looking Desert Garden and Kate O. Sessions Cactus Garden. Maybe the Timken Museum of Art or San Diego History Center can even inspire you?
Old Town San Diego State Historic Park
Address: San Diego Avenue and, Twiggs St, San Diego, CA 92110
Hours: 10:00am – 5:00pm daily

This historical park does have several picnic-style benches as well as grassy areas to study in, but the options are likely more limited when compared to the sheer mass and range of places Balboa has to study.
San Diego Libraries to Study In
San Diego Central Library @ Joan Irwin Jacobs Common

As well as featuring on our detailed guide on where to donate books in San Diego, the Central Library can make a great, relaxing place to study.
The Library is a jewel in the crown of San Diego’s vibrant downtown area, but acts as a safe haven for those of us looking to “cram!”
Keep in mind it’s not a university-affiliated library, and therefore doesn’t stay open as late into the night as other options here.
Geisel Library (UC San Diego)

We famously featured the Geisel Library as one of the greatest brutalist libraries in a previous article. If not for the sake of studying, it’s just a pretty cool (weird?) library to go and check out and say you’ve been to.
North Park Library

Best San Diego Coffee Shops for Studying
Caffè Calabria

This spacious indoor cafe doubles as a wood-fired pizza restaurant. So if you’re looking to reward yourself with some well-earned carbs after a study session, take a seat at their beautiful thick wooden tables and let the good times roll!
Café Bassam
Address: 3088 Fifth Ave, San Diego, CA 92103
Hours: Mon–Thu 8:00am – 10:00pm, Fri–Sun 8:00am – 11:00pm
This is technically defined as a “vintage cafe” and the wooden tables and chairs perhaps don’t lend themselves to a long study session, but it’s perfect for pulling out your laptop and enjoying the extremely unique decor while getting some work done.
Moniker Coffee Co

This place was so cool looking, we have to give them credit for the cover image of this article! The outside deck has plenty of tables and room to study.
Communal Coffee

Better Buzz Coffee (Multiple Locations)

This is one of the more famous local coffee haunts in SD, so we couldn’t complete the list without including Better Buzz.
Their chic minimal interior decor may not be the best vibe for studying, but their branches have multiple spacious patios with umbrellas and comfy seating for some outdoor studying. It’s also, you know, a San Diego institution!
This concludes the list of the best places to study in San Diego. I guess the only hard choice you’ll have now is deciding where your next study destination is going to be in this town!
